This project under the sponsorship of the European Commission Institute for Prospective Technologies collects data on the operations of the global Biopharma Multinational firms and their subsidiaries. The database with the complete global population of firms looks at the relationships between European Headquarters, their subsidiaries around the world, and the operations of global subsidiaries in Europe. The cases of Bulgarian Biopharma and the Biomedical technology cluster in the Greater South East in the UK highlight the challenges to value chain integration and upgrade through services and investment.

This is a collaborative project undertaken by scholars from the Research Centre for ‘Business Clusters, Networks and Economic Development’ (BCNED), University of Surrey, UK and ‘Stakeholders & Networks’ group, University of Sao Paolo, Brazil. With the sponsorship from the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN), the team engaged in a large number of collaborative meetings and workshops and prepared the ground for future collaborations.

The Surrey Business School has funded a research project undertaken by BCNED research group to look into the disciplinary and cross-disciplinary evolution of business and management knowledge measured through the RAE 2008. For the purpose of this project we have developed a unique and comprehensive database of all registered outputs combining journal articles from Unit of Assessment 36, with Units of Assessment 34 and 35, and a selection of applied business and management journal articles submitted across 13 other independent Units of Assessment.

These maps were produced as part of the competition entry for the 6th Iteration of ‘Places and Spaces: Mapping Science’, which was dedicated to "Science Maps for Scholars" (2010). We developed 2-D and 3-D representations of the Health Technology and Life Science Cluster in the Greater South East, UK. Our maps contain conceptual mapping of value-chains, representations of 2-mode networks, and the use of advanced methods for mapping of relational data in a geographic space.

An analysis of a database with over 10,000 anonymous prescription records shows that the interventions by the Message Dynamics Patient Messaging Service significantly improved patient compliance. A report with the results will be released shortly.

Centers of Excellence in Research in the Greater South East of England (GSE) is a database that includes all recipients of research funding in the region that have developed research capabilities in specific biotechnology, medical and health technology research. The report on the Centers of Excellence is included in the report for mapping of the Health Technology sector in the region. A report with the results from the analysis of this data can be found in the main report on the Health Technology Cluster in the Greater South East (2008).

A new multi-stage cluster methodology revealed that there are 31 industrial clusters active in the South East of England and among them are: Investment and Business Data Services, Computer Services, Business and Management Services, Chemical and Allied Products, Aircraft & Space Vehicles, Trucking & Warehousing, Transportation Services, Automotive Trade, and Marine Technologies and Transportation.
